Even though Cinco de Mayo is here, some might argue that there is no such thing as a good margarita when it comes to your waistline. Maybe that is true to a certain degree, but the fact is that not all margaritas are created equal. And some are a lot worse for your than others.

If you are mindful of your calories, the worst kind of margarita you can drink is just about anything made with something called "margarita mixer," which is just a fancy way of saying sugar water with lime flavoring. Or, in most cases, lime flavored water sweetened with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Whether you believe that cane sugar and HFCS are roughly the same as to how bad they are for you or not, both are highly refined sugars that are major culprits in US obesity statistics.

Real, authentic, and classic margaritas do not have "mixer" in them. The traditional recipe has very few ingredients: tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh squeezed lime juice. That's it, except for the sea salt on the rim of the glass and a lime wedge. Compare this, if you will, with the ingredients listed on the side of any bottle of commercial margarita mixer. It is kind of scary the things they put in there. A lot of calories and very little nutrition.

To enjoy a real margarita, it is important that you manage your expectations. A fat reducing overview can help you construct a clear describe of what you require to focus on to carry out your fat loss purpose if you're a starter; or serve as a reminder for the ones who are at an intermediate or more improve level of their weightloss program. Promptly after are seven steps that can serve as suggestions for your own weight loss program. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not exactly the same thing. Many weight loss programs have tricked people into wondering that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss plans only work by causing a person's body to eliminate more muscle flesh and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. A great many people tend to believe that a margarita is supposed to be a very large, sickly sweet with a lime aftertaste, drink that is roughly 16 ounces in size. In reality, a traditional margarita is much more like the martini that the character James Bond might order. It is small and has a terrific kick. And it has no mixer in it.

Quality Matters!

One of the reasons for the overwhelming flavor and sweetness of margarita mixers is that they are usually marketed with low quality tequila and the mixer is designed to hide the objectional taste of the cheap, impure alcohol.

The key to a good, traditional, margarita is to start with tequila that is made with 100% pure blue agave. If it does not say 100% blue agave on the label, then it is likely not your best choice. Depending upon where you live in the US, pure blue agave tequila comes in a wide variety of prices, from $10-15 a bottle for the low end stuff, to more than $50-100 a bottle for the finest labels.

The next choice of alcohol is also important, for the orange liqueur is what will give the margarita it's hint of sweetness. High quality orange liqueurs include Cointreau, Grand Marnier, Gran Gala, and Patron's Cintronge. If you are using good tequila, stay away from anything callling itself "triple sec" or you are just ruining the flavor of a fine cocktail.

For the lime juice, stick with fresh limes to be squeezed when you make your margarita. Not limeade, not concentrate, not the stuff that comes in little plastic bottles that look like a lime. No, buy real limes and use them. If you like an extra tart kick from your lime juice, squeeze a few key limes too. Also, before throwing away the fresh squeezed rinds, use them to moisten the rims of your margarita glasses. It adds a special something to the end of your tongue when taking a sip and also helps the sea salt stick to the rim in a satisfying way.

Calorie Counts?

A two shot margarita made with the top selling mixer comes in at 228 calories, which includes 24 grams of highly refined added sugar. How much is that? According to the website for Dr. Oz, women should limit their sugar consumption to 24 grams per DAY. Having it all in one drink hardly seems like a wise investment.

A two shot traditional margarita made with fresh lime juice and no mixer comes in at 167 calories. The count is not only much lower, but the fact that it is missing the added sugar will help you avoid outrageous insulin spikes that often make you hungrier. Remember, it is not just the calories that count, but the quality and source of those calories which can really make a difference.

Happy Cinco de Mayo. While sharing time with friends and family, and enjoying the taste of a real, authentic, margarita, impress your friends with your knowledge of the day.
