This week a three-day conference on the prevention and control of obesity was held in Washington D.C. Known as Weight of the Nation, this event was hosted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Health researchers and experts presented study findings and advice concerning the continuing obesity problem in American.

According to researchers, if the current trend of weight gain continues, 42% of the American population will be obese in another 18 years. Currently, about two-thirds of adult Americans are overweight or obese. Children are also involved with about 12 million between the ages of two and 19 being obese. A fat reducing overview can help you produce a clear summarize of what you require to focus on to carry out your fat burning target if you're a rookie; or serve as a reminder for the ones who are at an advanced or more boost phase of their losing weight program. Applying are seven steps that can serve as suggestions for your special weight loss program. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not the same thing. Many weight loss plans have tricked people into wondering that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss plans only work by producing a person's body to burn more muscle tissue and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more while overweight is a BMI between 25 and 29.

As a country we have serious health issues related to obesity including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, arthritis, and cancer. The medical costs are rising, and we need to change our ways.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has several goals that could help Americans slim down and live a healthier life. Three of these goals include: making exercise routine, creating eating environments where healthy food choices are easy, and ensuring that schools focus on obesity prevention.

Birmingham (and the rest of America) has the resources to makes these goals a reality.

  • Enjoy the great Alabama outdoors. Take a walk, ride a bike, or visit one of the many parks and gardens in the area--all free, by the way.
  • Visit one of the local Farmer's Markets for fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Prepare a vegetable garden with family or neighbors. This provides exercise, fresh air, and healthy food.
  • Support the Urban Food Project to help increase access to fresh food.
  • Join a neighborhood YMCA. Besides sports, the YMCA provides tips on healthy living.
  • Work with other parents to ensure that children have a recess and access to health education. Get involved with the school lunch program and support healthy choices.
  • Suggest worksite health programs. Contact public health and extension agencies and hospitals for programs offered.
  • Support health vending machine choices at work. Contact the Alabama Department of Public Health for a vending machine toolkit.

With a little thought and planning, change can be accomplished. Americans need to change their habits now.
