However, the tables seemed to have turned. Now, a lot of prominent weight loss programs have started to focus on the traditional, core Atkins idea of eating a lower carbohydrate diet. Although its typically referred to as a high protein diet, the truth is that Atkins promotes getting 25-30% of your daily calories from protein, which is right in line with the average recommendation by several health agencies of 10-35%.

The science behind Atkins is one that is focused on changing your bodys metabolism from one that burns carbohydrates to one that burns fat. This is achieved by finding your own personal carbohydrate tolerance level and eating adequate amounts of protein and fat. Yes, some fat is good for your diet. You just have to make sure its the right kind.

By limiting your carbohydrate consumption, you also limit the blood sugar and insulin spikes that are behind uncontrollable hunger and cravings, every dieters nightmare. Does this mean you give up anything that tastes sweet forever? No. You may not be able to eat it in the same quantities you used to, but as long as you stay within the guidelines suitable for your body, youre fine. Atkins also has its own line of yummy treats meant to satisfy your sweet tooth without putting you on the craving roller coaster.

But, what about the side effects that people often complained of, such as headaches, fatigue and irritability? According to Colette Heimowitz, VP of Nutrition and Education at Atkins Nutritionals, Inc., Atkins has modified its program within the last ten years to help alleviate these issues. There are four phases that help your body adjust to a new low-carb lifestyle and, by adhering to a recommended daily sodium intake of 2,000 mg (unless youre on a low sodium diet, of course), the side effects are minimal, if there are any at all.

Heimowitz, who has been a nutritionist for twenty-five years, admits that one size doesnt fit all when it comes to choosing the right weight loss program for each individual person, but the low carb approach fits a large segment of the population. Why? A lot of people suffer from carbohydrate intolerance.

What is carbohydrate intolerance? Its when your body doesnt have the ability to absorb certain carbohydrate chains. So when you eat foods that contain these chains, you get symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea and constipation. The cure? Either limit or completely eliminate the offending foods. What you have left is a low-carb diet that helps you feel better on a day-to-day basis allowing you to live a life free from painful abdominal issues.

Still not sold that Atkins is safe? There are over eighty published studies that you can access through their website that say otherwise. Not only will you have fellow weight loss peers cheering you on, but youll also receive guidance from nutritionists, such as Colette Heimowitz.

Is it the right eating plan for you? Only you can determine that. But, at least when you make your decision it will be one from a position of education and knowledge.
