At the fifth annual Angels of the Battlefield Gala held on Wednesday evening, Petty Officer Third Class Peter A. Gould was honored for providing lifesaving medical treatment on the front lines by the Armed Services YMCA. Hospital Corpsman Third Class Gould, who is from Syracuse, Kansas, accepted the "Angels of the Battlefield" award on behalf of all U.S. Navy corpsmen servicing the Marine Corps. Hospital Corpsman Third Class Gould is being honored for his outstanding dedication to duty during his service in Afghanistan. According to a press release, his squad was engaged on three sides by an estimated 30 to 45 enemy fighters during a local security patrol. One of the Marines was shot in the leg, and Gould, unconcerned for his personal safety, retrieved the wounded Marine for immediate medical attention while under fire. According to Military Times, while transporting the injured Marine, the unit struck an explosive device. The explosion critically wounded three members of the squad and shrapnel hit Gould in the face and neck. Still under effective fire, Gould was able to control the bleeding from his own face and neck with the help of a comrade, so that he was able to offer life-saving medical attention to the other wounded Marines.
The keynote speaker was General Raymond Odierno, Commander U.S. Joint Forces Command. The event honored corpsmen and medics from 10 branches of the active military, guard and reserve components. Top members of ASYMCA were also in attendance, including Eugene Habiger, General, USAF (Ret.), chairman of the National Board of Directors of the ASYMCA.

"Their unwavering heroism is something that moves me every year that I am fortunate enough to be in their company at this fine event, and as a retired airman, something I never took for granted in my many years of service.
