The FDA recently approved two new drugs for obesity, but some experts are dubious about whether physicians will promptly prescribe them, reported MedPage yesterday. The medications are Qsymia (phentermine/topiramate) and Belviq (lorcaserin). Although Qsymia is thought to provide more benefits, it requires physicians to complete the paperwork involved in an FDA risk evaluation and mitigation strategy (REMS).
"I don't see this as a horse race between the two drugs," Louis Aronne, MD, of Columbia University, who treated patients with both drugs in clinical trials, revealed to MedPage. "There will be specific situations where one or the other may be indicated." For example, Dr. Aronne said that because Belviq is viewed as safer, a physician may chose to prescribe that drug for someone who is older and diabetic. Why the concern about Qsymia? Dr. Aronne explained that the hesitation is linked to the phentermine in the drug, which is associated with the failed diet drug Fen-Phen. However, when that medication was removed from the market due to heart valve risks, that side effect actually resulted from fenfluramine. "But I think as time goes on, that won't be an issue," Dr. Aronne predicted.
However, the majority of experts appear to be more dubious than Dr. Aronne. HealthDay News reported on July 19 that most health professionals feel that the two new weight loss drugs will not solve the nation's obesity epidemic.
