Today, eating has become less about nourishing the body and more about satisfying urges. What to do then? The answer may not be what you expect. You should actually eat more! Try to find a healthy snack like your favorite fruit or vegetable, butter-less popcorn, high fiber granola bars or multigrain choices of many other snacks. These foods are more complex and will take your body longer to digest, therefore they will give you sustained energy. But the most important part about eating snacks throughout the day is that when it comes time for lunch and dinner, you will not feel the need to eat as much. Meals will fill you up faster and you will naturally eat less. Inevitably we may encounter ourselves eating too much anyhow because we are used to eating more at our meals. If you choose to snack on smart foods throughout the day, plan your meals accordingly. Cook smaller portions, order a half salad and soup instead of an entree.

The lesson should be that less is more over time. Think about your snacks ahead of time. When you shop, select healthy options over your preferred munchies. Plan when you will eat them. No one knows your body like you do. What time of the day do you usually feel empty? Instead of reaching for the extra cup of coffee, donut, or a salty bag of chips, pack your new favorite snack and a bottle of water. You will quickly find that you will have much more energy throughout the day. Additionally, if you combine this dietary adjustment with regular exercise you will certainly see those pounds shed off.
