NC-Based House of Raeford Recalls Cooked Chicken Breasts

House of Raeford Farms, headquartered in Rose Hill NC (north of Wilmington), has announced a voluntary recall of approximately 4,100 pounds of cooked, ready-to-eat chicken breasts that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The company was notified that a sample submitted by an end user tested positive in an accredited outside laboratory.

There have been no reported illnesses or adverse reactions due to consumption of the chicken, per a news release by the company, dated December 9, 2011, and per the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the USDA.

The product being recalled is the House of Raeford-Royal Oven Roasted Skinless Chicken Breast packed in 18 to 22 pound cases containing two 9 to 11 pound packages per box. These were shipped to foodservice distribution centers in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

The packages carries the item code 94268 and a code date of 1270 (27 Sep 11). The products were produced at House of Rae3fords Further Processing plant located in Raeford, NC. Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. It is rare in healthy people but those at increased risk of infection include those with poor immune systems such as infants, the elderly, and persons with HIV or who are undergoing chemotherapy.

Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, so pregnant women are advised to avoid certain foods that are at increased risk for the bacteria, including luncheon meats, raw milk, and soft cheeses.

According to the USDA, the best way to avoid listeriosis is to wash your hands with warm, soapy water before and after handling raw meat or poultry. Also wash cutting boards, utensils and dishes with hot, soapy water. Using separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry, vegetables and egg products also prevents cross-contamination.
