Bicyclists should be given a tax credit, not a tax or license fee

The writer read recently that some lawmaker in New York was proposing an idea for a kind of tax on bicycle usage. This would have been a mandated licensing fee between $25 and $50 dollars for adults that use their bicycles in New York. Luckily this proposal was stopped in its tracks and bicyclists can take some comfort in that. However this does not mean that this proposal could not come up again. Most of us living in Western New York have had to deal with too many taxes or licensing fees and but there has to be a limit to this madness. Conversely; I am suggesting that bicyclists in Western New York should be given a tax break for many reasons such as being less of a burden on the health care system, and because their bicycles cause less damage to our environment.

Most people are aware that riding a bicycle has many health benefits can improve ones endurance, lower body weight and improved over all physical health. This could mean fewer visits to your doctor. The writer himself was once a member of a local bicycle club and was told by many members that even when a bicycle rider has to have major heart surgery, their members have been known to have shorter stays in the hospital. That is because people that ride their bicycles regularly, have stronger hearts because of their improved cardio health. Also riding a bicycle can help increase your endurance, or tolerance to be able to do more physical tasks with less exhaustion. So along with better health these bicycle riders are causing less damage to our environment.

As a nation we are so dependent our cars and trucks that its rare to see anyone using a bicycle to get to work or even for leisure. The writer has often heard this said by others, Well when I was younger I used to ride my bicycle everywhere but as an adult they may choose more times than not to just use their cars and trucks to go anywhere. A tax break for people that use their bicycles on a regular basis bicycles could change that way of thinking.
