What would you say if you found out that you could get a diploma from a major university without ever having to attend a class, do homework or take a test? All you need to do is pay for your tuition and at the end of the term youll receive your degree. Sound enticing?

It may certainly make you look better on paper, but what do you think it would be like trying to find a job in that field? You may initially get an employer to hire you because you appear to be qualified or can finesse your way in, but within a week or two on the job theyll see that you dont know anything and youll be headed out the door.

That puts you right back where you are right now, right? Why? Because you didnt learn the skills necessary to succeed in that profession. You just paid someone else to make you feel like you did.

What does this have to do with weight loss? Unfortunately, quite a bit.

In this day and age, there are health and fitness professionals everywhere that are trying to convince you that you can lose weight and get in shape without having to do any work whatsoever. You dont have to watch what you eat, exercise or change your behaviors. Just send them your hard earned money and theyll make sure you're a success.

Sometimes theyre rather convincing, too. If theyre good salespeople, they appeal to your heart and play on the fact that you want weight loss so bad you can taste it. They say just the right things and do just the right things until youre certain that theyre the answer to your problems. You buy their products or services and expect that your life will be great. Youll earn that diploma from the School of Weight Loss and finally achieve success.

Admittedly, there are some great products and knowledgeable health professionals out there who do have products and services that are healthy and good for you. But, there are also a lot of people just out to make a dollar for themselves. Theyll sell you their plan or program simply because they want to increase their bank account, not because they want to decrease your waistline.

How do you know who is who? Here are some things to watch out for:

  • Promises of excessive weight loss in minimal amounts of time. While this is certainly what everyone would love to see happen, its not only unreasonable but its also unhealthy for your body. If you want to lose weight for the long term, youre going to want to do it by losing no more than two pounds a week. Yes, you may lose it faster in the beginning, but this should be a bonus, not a goal.
  • Telling you that you can eat anything. Sure, you can lose weight by eating just junk food if you dont take in too many calories, but your health is going to suffer. The reason you want to choose foods that have high nutrition content is because your body needs a lot of vitamins and minerals to run smoothly and keep its immune system strong. Losing weight and getting healthy is a process. And, the only way youll achieve your goals in these areas is to actually engage in behaviors that get you thin and healthy these are eating nutritiously and exercising.

There may be some products that youll come across along the way that do wonderful things; not all of them are bad. But, you owe it to yourself, your body, your health and your family to make sure that youre not doing more harm than good while looking for a solution to your weight loss problem.
