As the weather in Nashville hits the 90's, Summer is when locals thoughts start turning to charcoal, gas, and smoke for some good old fashioned Southern grilling. But for those of us trying to manage our weight, grill outs are minefields of danger. Much of the standard grill food, hot dogs, hamburgers, steaks, and ribs, are major fat and calorie sinks.

But grilling out, when done correctly, can be one of the healthiest cooking options available. Here are some ideas for foods to try on the grill.

Squash and Zucchini

People automatically think about giant slabs of meat when they think of grilling out, but a number of vegetables hold up really well to grilling, none more so than yellow squash and zucchini. Fish

Fish is one of those proteins that people just don't associate with a backyard barbeque and that's a shame because grilled fish, when done correctly, is one of the best tasting things in the world. The key to a good grilled fish is to choose fish that comes in thick steaks and can handle high heat without falling apart. Popular choices are salmon, tuna, halibut, and swordfish. If all you have are more delicate fillets like tilapia, you can either purchase planks to cedar grill on or just lightly spray some aluminum foil to place over the slats of your grill. While your fish won't get the attractive grill marks using this method, it will get the smoked flavor without falling apart on you.
