It's not often that a column about weight loss gets to venture into the realm of politics, but this week's admission by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie that he checked into a hospital under a fake name in February to have Lap Band surgery has brought politics and obesity together. More interestingly, it has brought the politics of obesity into the national discussion.
Christie insists his decision to have Lap Band surgery was motivated by his desire to be healthier for his family after struggling with obesity for 20 years. While this is absolutely the right reason for anyone to have weight loss surgery, it's hard to put aside Christie's reported Presidential ambitions as a part of the story. Especially as, since he became a Republican front runner prior to the 2012 elections, frequent news stories have devoted column inches and airtime to the question of "Is Chris Christie too fat to be President?"
America has, in recent years, liked our Presidents to look, well, presidential. We tend to gravitate toward the Hollywood good looks of Ronald Reagan or the youthful vigor of Barack Obama. Bill Clinton, who would barely qualify as overweight in current American culture, had to answer frequent questions about his weight.
But it hasn't always been that way. American history has is littered with overweight Presidents, probably the most notable being William Howard Taft, who urban legend says got stuck in the bathtub on his inauguration day.
Has the unforgiving camera eye, which so famously gave the youthful and good looking John F. Kennedy a win in the first ever televised debate with Richard Nixon, come so far that it is not intellect or knowledge of issues or leadership that draws us to a President but physical attractiveness?
We live in an era where we have elected our first African American President. The early favorite for the Democratic nomination in 2016 is a woman. There are openly gay Congressmen and openly Muslim congressmen. He will likely find it a challenge that is more difficult than any political battle he will ever fight. If, as he says, this was done to improve his health and his family, then he is off to a great start. If, as some have suggested, this is a slim down for a 2016 Presidential run, it's a sad commentary on the state of the nation.
Whatever your opinion of Chris Christie's politics, his demeanor, or his mental fitness to be President, he deserves better than to have his worthiness judged by a number on a scale. We all do.
