Biggest Loser season 12 premiere: 'Now your hell begins' (Photos)

Biggest Loser season 12 premiere recap: New trainers, an age-based battle and a Debbie Downer moment.

The scene: California desert. Sky full of choppers, armored vehicles on the ground. This is serious, people!

Fifteen people in gray Biggest Loser shirts zip through the desert in a big black bus. We begin to meet some of the contestants. Daddy Joe, who wants to be a better father. Debby, who wants to teach her kids how to be healthier.

The contestants are dropped off in the middle of the desert, without a clue. Antone wonders out loud: Were in the middle of the desert, so it cant be good.

Host Alison Sweeney shows up and lines up the contestants by age, revealing the theme of Biggest Loser season 12: Battle of the Ages. The 15 contestants are in three groups: 30 and younger (Young), 50 and older (Older), and everyone else in between (Middle).

From out of the sky come Marine CH-46 helicopters carrying trainers Bob Harper, Anna Kournikova and Dolvett Quince.

The challenge: Who gets to train with whom? They had to race one mile; winning team gets first choice, and so on. Everyones gunning for Bob well, except for Ramon, who would be totally cool with Anna.

The Middle team finished first and made a beeline for Bob (Black team), whos right in line with their demographic (hes a very well kept 46). The Youngsters went for Dolvett (Red team), and Anna (Blue team) got to knit a sweater while waiting for the Oldsters to show up. Naw, she didnt wait for them, she met them on their trek in fact, everyone ran out to greet the last team in, to the strains of the song Show Me What I'm Looking For, by Carolina Liar.

Then Alison let them in on a cool new twist. Meanwhile, back at the ranch (whoo hoo, first use of the phrase for the season! High five!), the three trainers met the contestants at the gym, festooned with new equipment and giant posters of past contestants (we spotted Hannah Curlee, Tara Costa, Michelle Aguilar and Jesse Wornum).

Later that night, Becky got a call from home that her father had died of congestive heart failure. How did she cope? She walked down to the gym in the middle of the night and worked out her grief on the arc trainer. The death hit her team especially hard -- they could see themselves with a similar fate.

Last-chance workout: We got to see everyones training styles Dolvett is the replacement yeller, replacing Jillian. Why are you holding onto my treadmill?!? Dolvett shouted at Patrick. Bob had Antone in some sort of post-workout conniption fit on the ground, and Anna is now the warm n snuggly trainer.

Weigh-in: The team with the lowest percentage has to choose someone to eliminate. Only person safe is the person on the team with the highest percentage of weight lost. Heres the tale of the scale, from oldest to youngest:

Elimination: The Black team crushed the competition, leaving the Blue team to eliminate a contestant. Johnny was exempt since he lost the most of the group. Everyone else made their tearful case to stay on the ranch, but Debbie kinda served herself up for elimination by saying that she had a good support system at home and then turning on Bonnie --yikes. It was a Debbie-Bonnie back-and-forth vote but in the end it was Debbie. Not a surprise since she got all snippy with Bonnie. Did she do that on purpose? Did she really just want to go home?

The update: The jazzy granny is now down to 215 pounds and working out with her kids and grandkids. Today, I feel limitless, she says.

Next week: Lotsa tears, yelling and Lady Gaga music. Oh, and Tim Tebow (go Gators!).
