"Hey, Dad, what's for dinner?" In homes across the nation, the typical response tends to be McDonald's or another fast food restaurant. As a result, type 1 and type 2 diabetes are increasing among U.S. children and teens, according to a report presented this weekend in Philadelphia at the American Diabetes Association's annual meeting. What can you do to protect your children from this fate? Studies show that when families eat home-cooked meals together, children and teens have reduced rates of obesity, diabetes, and other diseases. First Lady Michelle Obama is so concerned about spreading this message that she's devoting her time to chatting with talk show hosts such as Rachael Ray about the importance of healthy family meals.

Celebrity chef John Besh and his wife were concerned about their own family's eating habits, he said in a Parade magazine interview published today. Although John owned famous restaurants and starred on reality cooking shows, his family loved the convenience of fast food. The solution: they came up with a plan to help them succeed with family meals. For John, who authored "My Family Table: A Passionate Plea for Home Cooking," it was surprisingly simple, yet effective:

  • Fill up the pantry with healthy basics, such as grains, spices, chicken, and shrimp.   • Stop stressing about eating dinner every night at a certain time. Choose a time that's convenient each night. For example, on days when their sons have sports practice in the evening, dinner is served at 4 pm.
  • That family meal doesn't have to be breakfast. Choose quality time to determine the best option. For John, it's breakfast.
  • Can't do it every day? Start small, such as establishing a big Sunday brunch. "Just come together as a family whenever you have the time," says Jennifer.
