When it comes to challenges in life, few can seem as frustrating as losing weight, particularly as you get older. If you're thinking that your scale has broken...or your pants have shrunk...it's time for expert help. And that's why we asked renowned weight loss expert Dr. Mike Roizen to share his secrets to slim-down success with us. Dr. Roizen is the co-author of two best-selling books about dieting: "YOU: Losing Weight: The Owner's Manual to Simple and Healthy Weight Loss" (click to order) and "YOU: On A Diet Revised Edition: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management" (click to buy now).

Whether you need to lose five pounds or 50 pounds, try these tips from Dr. Roizen to make your weight loss dreams into a reality:

  • As you age, take charge of your weight by making small changes in your diet to avoid weight gain. Motivating fact: "The average woman gains twenty-four pounds between the ages of twenty-five and sixty-five," warns Dr. Roizen. "If you want to lose weight, the whole fight comes down to a measly 100 calories a daythats ten permanent pounds and roughly three inches off your waist every year," he says encouragingly. Small swaps like eating an apple instead of that doughnut during your morning snack break can add up.
  • Make exercise a priority. Just 20 minutes of cardio three times a week plus lifting weights for a total of 30 minutes weekly boosts your calorie burn while reducing the amount of fat stored, says Dr. Roizen. Not into walking for fitness? Then get fit and firm by clicking here for the exercise DVD in which Dr. A fat reduction overview can help you produce a clear outline of what you require to focus on to carry out your fat burning purpose if you're a novice; or serve as a reminder for the ones who are at an intermediate or more enhance phase of their weight-loss program. Applying are seven steps that can serve as methods for your personal weight loss program. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not exactly the same thing. Many weight loss applications have fooled people into believing that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss plans only work by leading to a person's body to burn more muscle flesh and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. Roizen co-stars: "You on a Diet Workout." He also recommends meditating daily.
  • Climbed on the gluten-free bandwagon? Not everyone needs to go gluten-free, says Dr. Roizen. However, if you've chosen that path for health reasons or to lose weight, be aware of hidden gluten in products ranging from soy sauce to lunch meats. Choose gluten-free foods wisely, emphasizing whole foods that are naturally gluten-free rather than what he calls stripped carbs (that is, processed foods that substitute sugar for whole wheat).
  • When it comes to diets in general, avoid what Dr. Roizen terms the "five food felons:" Added sugars, added syrups, processed grains rather than whole grains, saturated fats and trans fats.
  • Limit the amount of red meat that you eat. Dr. Roizen cites a recent study showing that "more than 4 ounces of red meat (or red meat plus egg yolks, plus carnitine and lecithin and choline) a week changes the way the bacteria inside your intestine function." The result can cause inflammation and increase your risk of "heart disease, memory loss, wrinkles, impotence, breast and prostate cancer and strokes."
  • Bottom line for waist management and health: "Data indicate that a diet of complex (not stripped of protein, or fiber) vegetarian fare, with Mediterranean overtones--extra virgin olive oil, fish (the healthiest are salmon and ocean trout), and little to no dairy or red meat-- promotes health," says Dr. Roizen.
