Vogue magazine puts Lady Gaga on an artsy 'airbrush diet' for cover photo

When Vogue magazine chose Lady Gaga for its prestigious cover photo opportunity, it seemed like the perfect marriage: a magazine considered by many to be the ultimate in chic fashion featuring a woman viewed as the most creative and versatile woman in the music industry. However, the magazine's design divas apparently doubted that Lady Gaga appeared fit and fab enough to dazzle readers. Their solution: the art of the airbrush, slimming Lady Gaga's curves until she resembled a Barbie doll body for the September cover of Vogue. What they did not anticipate: the verbal "perfect storm" that occurred this week when others viewed the cover.

Radar Online today reported that many media members are outraged, considering it more of an illustration than a legitimate photo. A "reality check" comparison between the cover shot and the behind-the-scenes video (shown here) lend credence to those complaints. On the cover, Lady Gaga looks like she could win a contest for tiniest waist in the world (even Scarlett O'Hara would be envious). The video, however, represents Lady Gaga at her loveliest: as a real, curvy, "born this way" woman.

"Sometimes I wonder why people bother with the original photography anymore when the end result is basically just a photo illustration," blogged Amy Odell of BuzzFeed in a comment representative of those angered by the airbrushing.
