About 15 years ago, if someone mentioned "fiber" to you, your first thought was probably Yuckcardboard. And, of course, cereals back then with fiber tasted much like cardboard soaked in milk. (Got that picture clear in your mind?)

Well, it is time to rethink fiber and try some of the newer cereals on the market, and some not-so-new, that include at least 5 grams of fiber. Depending on whether you are male or female and your age, the medical community recommends that we get between 25-35 grams of fiber daily. Most people consume barely 10 grams a day. Fiber plays a major role in our health and needs to be part of a healthy diet. Eating foods high in fiber will give you that full feeling that lasts a lot longer. Ever notice that when you eat oatmeal for breakfast, that those snack attacks are pushed back for several more hours?

If you are pressed for time at breakfast, or just want a snack of cold cereal, then check out these FIVE HIGH-FIBER, and GREAT TASTING cereals that are favorites of mine. Nutritionally, their calorie count includes a half cup of nonfat milk, they are low in fat, and have low or no cholesterol or sodium. You should have at least 60 grams of protein daily, and cereals just do not provide much more than five grams. So consider adding foods with protein when you eat breakfast. These cereals are also good for diabetics, since the sugar content is either zero or very low. There is no need to add any sugar to any of these cereals.

KASHI HONEY SUNSHINE WHOLE GRAIN CEREAL SQUARES: If you like your cereal a bit sweetened, then this is a great one to try.

POST SHREDDED WHEAT: This cereal has been around in the U.S. since 1893. Of all the cereals highlighted here, it is the best for those who are watching their sugar intakeit has no sugar, so is good for those who are watching their total calorie intake. The box cover says it all: low calorie, no sugar, and high fiber. You might think that with no sugar, it has a blah taste, but you would be wrong. With the milk, it is filling and tasty.

Unfortunately, diabetics who are on a strict carb-count diet will likely have to eat just half a serving (1/4 cup), as the total carbohydrates in a full serving is 48 grams!

KASHI ISLAND VANILLA ORGANIC WHOLE WHEAT BISCUITS: Another great cereal if you tend toward a sweet tooth.

Your days of eating tasteless high-fiber cereal are over. Now you have five great cereals that wont break your diet plan and will still leave you feeling full and satisfy your sweet tooth.

You can find these cereals in most grocery stores. The Kashi brand will often be a little cheaper in your popular supermarkets than in the specialty healthfood stores. The commissary at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque carries all these brands of cereals.
