The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans were released in late January 2011. But what does this really mean for most Americans? These guidelines simply identify habits that the United States Department of Agriculture feel that U.S. citizens need to change based on research.

This set of guidelines is focused on obesity and the reduction of chronic diseases through proper nutrition and physical activity.

This document identifies the key concepts, which include:

  1. Balancing calories consumed and monitoring portion sizes.
  2. Eating more fruits and vegetables and choosing low fat dairy products.
  3. Eating less sodium filled foods and drinking less sugary drinks

  1. Adding physical activity to daily routines
  2. Monitoring cholesterol, saturated and trans fats

Overall, most Americans need to eat less processed foods and think whole foods.
