Plant-based diet power just may become the new mantra among athletes ranging from bodybuilders to tennis players, according to Reuters. Their reasons vary from improving health, as in the case of Venus Williams who became a vegan after her diagnosis with an autoimmune disease, to optimizing their level of fitness, as with marathon champ Brendan Brazier, author of "Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life" (click to order).

"I knew I had to improve," Brendan told Reuters. "I tried high carb, low carb, high protein, low protein, all sorts of different diets. A fat reduction overview can help you build a clear outline of what you need to focus on to accomplish your fat reduction target if you're a starter; or serve as a reminder for those who are at an advanced or more improve step of their weight loss program. Following are seven steps that can serve as methods for your own weight loss program. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not the same thing. Many weight loss courses have fooled people into thinking that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss programs only work by resulting in a person's body to burn more muscle tissue and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. Then I tried plant-based. It started with me just taking a daily blender drink of fats, plants, proteins." And from there he expanded, developing his own recipes which he unveiled in his cookbook, "Thrive Foods: 200 Plant-Based Recipes for Peak Health" (click to buy).

So what does a vegan diet do for athletes? "We see athletes recovering faster, maximizing training, and thereby improving performance," commented Julieanna Hever, who is a registered dietitian, personal trainer and author of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition" (click to order). But because no clinical trials have been performed on athletes who follow a plant-based diet, no actual data is available to confirm her comments. Want to try it to see if it improves your own athletic performance? Brendan suggests a transition by enjoying a smoothie made of plant proteins (we like Vega Sport Performance Protein Vanilla - click for details), essential fats, fruit and fiber greens. (Tip: For a tasty vegan smoothie, try combining a banana, unsweetened almond milk and Lifetime Life's Basics Plant Protein Chocolate - click for details.)
