The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a strong warning about DMAA this past Thursday. DMAA or dimethylamylamine is used as a supplement in energy drinks and other products. This supplement supposedly helps build muscle and promotes weight loss. However, the chemical can also increase blood pressure, cause irregular heartbeats, and may lead to heart attacks or other medical problems such as anxiety, vomiting, and chest pain.

This is not the first time that DMAA has been singled out by the FDA. The agency sent a warning letter to companies with products containing DMAA in 2012. Most companies complied and removed products. Only USPLabs continues to sell products with the supplement, citing research that shows the supplement is safe.

So far the FDA has received 86 reports of health problems or death associated with the supplement. Although these reports are not definitive proof that the health issues were caused by supplement, the FDA has labeled products with DMAA illegal.

So why is the supplement still on the market?

According to the FDA, banning an ingredient is difficult. The FDA has limited authority over supplements. As the law stands now, supplements are not scrutinized in the same way drugs are.

Companies that manufacture drugs must prove safety and effectiveness with research trials and then get FDA approval before bringing a drug to market. Dietary supplements do not need FDA approval. After the supplement is on store shelves, the FDA must prove that the product is not safe.

USPLabs has stated that it is not aware of any serious complication from using the product according to directions. And it site shows published research that verifies the safety of DMAA. However, the FDA found the studies insufficient to defend the use of DMAA.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), a trade association that represents dietary supplement manufacturers, has stated that it agrees with the FDA concerning the unsafe nature of DMAA and has asked its member companies to stop producing products with the supplement. Promptly after are seven steps that can serve as suggestions for your own weight loss system. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not exactly the same thing. Many weight loss plans have misled people into believing that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss programs only work by resulting in a person's body to eliminate more muscle flesh and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor.

Those who favor DMAA say that the ingredient is a natural stimulant found in the geranium plant. However, chemicals found in nature are not always safe or benign. Rhubarb leaves are toxic. Holly berries can cause extreme vomiting and diarrhea. All parts of the foxglove plant are poisonous and a source of the powerful heart drug (not supplement) digitalis. And most people know what poison ivy does to ones skin.

We all must be vigilant about the supplements we choose to use. Read labels and do not believe everything that marketers throw your way. And skip the DMAA.
