In a significant win for dieters, the FDA approved a new diet drug on July 17 that can boost your weight loss and suppress your appetite, reported Time magazine today. Called Qsymia, the prescription medication has been shown in studies to help obese patients lose about 10 percent of their weight and is considered the most effective weight loss drug ever approved.
Qsymia, which previously was called Qnexa, is intended for those who weigh 30 pounds or more than they should. Alternatively, if you are overweight and have related concerns such as type 2 diabetes or heart disease, you may want to talk with your doctor about the medication. "It's not for patients who want to lose a few pounds," Peter Tam, president of Vivus, which manufactures the drug, told USA Today. Timothy Garvey, chair of the department of nutrition sciences at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, warns, "This is not a magic pill. Patients can't take it and think that's all they have to do.
