Freshology is a meal-delivery plan that caters to people who want to lose weight and eat healthy food, but don't necessarily want to spend any time in the kitchen. And if you're the kind of person who has Chinese takeout on speed dial, this may be a better idea. The company recently teamed up with trainer Jillian Michaels for a plan that incorporates Michaels' Master Your Metabolism principles and her workouts.
Jillian Michaels Freshology Gold delivers meals as well as workouts. On the first week, you'll receive three meals and one snack a day plus her Ripped in 30 workout DVD and an insulated tote bag to cart around your meals. Calorie ranges are 1,150 to 1,400 for women and 1,600 to 1,800 for men.
Unlike other meal-delivery plans, you don't have to supplement the meals with anything -- all the meals are self contained, which may help with reconciling the cost. No, it's not cheap -- it's around $50 a day -- but the quality of the food is excellent and it's a great way to get a handle on portion control. And if your day consists of a breakfast muffin from the bakery, lunch out with co-workers and a takeout delivery, you may find the cost on a par with what you're spending now.
One way to use the plan is to order it for a couple weeks to jumpstart your weight-loss plan and see what portions are supposed to look like -- unlike gargantuan restaurant portions or teeny frozen diet meal boxes.
So how are the meals? Freshology sent us a week of meals so we could check them out, and overall we were impressed with the quality and flavor. The meals arrive chilled and not frozen, which helps keep the fruits and vegetables crisp and not mushy. And to keep things extra fresh, you get two shipments a week.
Some of the meals we sampled:
Teriyaki Chicken With Sauteed Bok Choy and Shiitake Mushrooms: The chicken breast was plentiful and juicy and the bok choy and mushrooms were fresh tasting. The meal also had around a half-cup of jasmine rice.
Mandarin Steak Salad: A large portion of crisp greens and grape tomatoes with mandarin oranges and cubes of steak.
Basil & Artichoke Omelet with Fresh Fruit and Turkey Bacon: A hearty breakfast with two big slices of turkey bacon, berries and pineapple, and an omelet stuffed with an artichoke mixture.
Desserts consisted of nicely-sized sweets like Agave Carrot Cake, Fudge Brownie, Gluten-Free Peanut Butter Cookies, and Passion Fruit Cheesecake.
An important tip for any meal-delivery plan: Always "plate" the food onto your own dishes.
