At the same time as it's getting slammed by critics as a major sponsor of the London Olympic Games, McDonald's is rolling out its new "Favorites Under 400 Calories" marketing campaign. Their goal: highlighting menu items that are relatively low in calories. Among the items on the featured menu are options that range from an order of medium fries to an Oreo McFlurry. What the chain isn't highlighting: the fact that their food options that are low in calories aren't necessarily low in sugar, fat, and sodium. A 300-calorie cheeseburger, for example, contains 720 mg of sodium. That's almost half of the 1,500 mg of sodium recommended by the Institute of Medicine as the correct amount for most Americans, according to the CDC.

We've found that customers are surprised to learn about the calorie content of some of their favorite menu options at McDonald's," said Neil Golden, chief marketing officer of McDonalds USA. About 80 percent of national menu choices are under 400 calories for the standard recipe," he added. However, the Huffington Post reported that doctors, politicians, and health experts in the UK are criticizing McDonald's sponsorship of the London Olympics games. "It's very sad that an event that celebrates the very best of athletic achievements should be sponsored by companies contributing to the obesity problem and unhealthy habits," Terence Stephenson, a spokesman for the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges, declared.

However, as an official sponsor of the Olympics, McDonald's has branding rights within Olympic Park and has no corporate competition, reported the Washington Post August 3. Consequently, the official dining room for the Olympic athletes features McDonald's as the only fast food option. Chief Olympic caterer Jan Matthews defended options such as Egg McMuffins (complete with sausages) for the more than 24,000 athletes, coaches and team officials from 200-plus countries who feast in the dining room daily, telling the Washington Post that it's a popular selection. "I think its a choice thing, she asserted. The fact is, people like it. Following are seven steps that can serve as guidelines for your special weight loss system. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not a similar thing. Many weight loss plans have fooled people into thinking that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss plans only work by producing a person's body to eliminate more muscle tissue and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. One athlete who won't be queuing up for Spicy Chicken McBites at 910 calories: Ryan Lochte, who prepped for the games by halting his consumption of McDonald's "pretty much every day," he told Fox News.

Ryan isn't the only one who views McDonald's as unhealthy. In a move that tarnishes those Golden Arches, Chile passed a law halting companies from including toys in fast food meals for kids, targeting McDonald's Happy Meals, reported the Christian Science Monitor on August 2. Lawmakers there are concerned that, just as in the United States, obesity among children has become an epidemic. "These businesses know that this food damages the health of children. They're using fraudulent and abusive means," Senator Giudo Giraldi told Fox News.
