Back in December, I wrote about the virtues of wool workout wear, which rivals even the most advanced technical fabrics on the market in terms of breathability and temperature regulation. As counterintuitive as it may sound to wear wool while breaking a sweat, the fact that it is quick-drying and naturally-antibacterial means that this super-soft fabric is ideal for hardcore athletes.
Runners are a particularly demanding bunch; the repetitive motion of logging lots of miles means were perpetually on the hunt for gear that can stand the test of time in fabrics that dont leave us chafed and sopping with sweat at the end of a tough workout.
Enter Icebreaker, the New Zealand company that pioneered the outdoor merino wool apparel category. Their GT technical sports line has long held cult status among runners, so the company responded to consumer demand by launching a specialist range of running apparel, called GT Run, as part of Icebreakers Spring/Summer 2011 collection.

The GT Run line features sleeveless tees, crews, tanks, shorts, tights and a racer-back bra. Run-specific features on the new styles include eyelet panels for breathability, reflective details for visibility, zippered stash pockets, plus cord management systems for listening to music.
Sure, Icebreakers products can be on the pricey side, but with proper care (simply wash as usual minus fabric softener and air dry), they will hold up well and perform for long periods of time. In fact, the known record for wearing an Icebreaker non-stop is 196 days in extreme conditions.
I tried out the following pieces from the line and found them both to be surprisingly versatile and well-worth their price tags:
Run Swift Short ($60)
Take the look of a speedy technical short with the coziness of your favorite well-worn sweats, and youve got the Swift Short. Its merino-LYCRA blend combines performance properties with an unbelievable softness for a short that will take you from gym to trail to track with ease. Run Rush Bra ($50)
The absolute last thing anyone wants is an itchy sports bra. Luckily the Rush Bras 92% merino content ensures softness, comfort and fast dry time. So you can worry less about your assets and more about kicking ass on the roads. Special features include racer-back straps and thoughtful details such as a wide hem band and a non-stretch inset in the front shoulder strap to give extra support.
