In a sport measured in mere fractions of a second, 12-time Olympic medalist for USA Swimming Natalie Coughlin knows a little something about how to be efficient with her time.

Its precisely why she teamed up with TRX Suspension Training after the 2008 Olympic Games, making it a training staple for maintaining her strength and stability despite a hectic schedule and frequent travels.

But its not every day that weekend warriors have the opportunity to partake in a true TRX Olympic-level workout, like "Train with Natalie" contest winner Renea Cribbs got to do earlier this month.

Cribbs, 57, flew from her home in North Richland Hills, Texas, to the 24 Hour Fitness Super Sport in Pleasanton, Calif., for a one-on-one training session with the Bay Area native.

Coughlin led her through a series of TRX push-ups, crunches and core strengthening routines on dry land before they hit the pool to focus on swimming advice, such as stroke technique and breathing tips.

Afterward, I sat down with Coughlin, who said she is preparing to head to Africa in a few weeks in support of one of her favorite charities, Right to Play. Shell be in the field, helping to expand play opportunities for children of all abilities, especially those who face obstacles that impede their full participation in society.

Here are a few of the highlights from our conversation:

JH: So, how do you think Renae did today?

NC: I thought Renae did a fantastic job I gave her what I do, and Im a 30-year old Olympic athlete. I dont know any other 50+ women who are doing intense workouts like that. Shes going to be very sore tomorrow, but I think she did a really good job!

Whats a tip from todays workout that we can share with readers?

An overall take-home would be to work on form. With any exercise that you do, its easy for us all to get competitive with one another you look to the person on your left and youre like, Oh, theyre doing eight, I want to do 10. But just step outside of that be competitive with yourself, and go for perfect form. That way, youre getting the true purpose of the workout, and youll get a lot more of the benefit, as well.

Youre 30 now and in amazing shape; how has your workout routine evolved over the years to help you maintain your level of fitness?

Evolving is important in training. I train at UC Berkeley, so I train with 18-year olds, and whats appropriate for them at that age is not necessarily appropriate for me now. Essentially, Im working out to have the best performance in a race as possible. Something I learned over this past summer was that I was a little overzealous in training I think I swam a little too much and my performances in the Olympic Trials and the Olympics suffered because of it. Recovery and rest is becoming much more important as I get older, but on the flip side there are some benefits to getting older: Im much stronger, and I maintain that strength better than before. But as you age you tend to break down faster, so its really important for me to keep my strength and ease back when I swim, focusing more on race relevance.

When youre not training, what does your workout look like?

It always changes when Im not in training mode. Ive been exploring yoga, running, doing my TRX, and Ive just been swimming a little bit not for distance or for a true swim workout, but just to feel the water. Over the years, Ive tried all sorts of different things, though Ive done kickboxing classes, Dancing with The Stars after the last Olympics, etc. Im always active in some way, shape or form, but that could range from a hike with my dogs to running 10 miles; it changes every day based on my mood. But I am someone who likes to be active and likes to maintain an active lifestyle mainly because I like to eat!

Do you have any advice you can share for prioritizing and incorporating exercise and healthy eating habits into a busy lifestyle?

Its really important to prioritize your fitness routine, as well as your diet, because we are all busy, and its easy to make poor choices when youre on the go. You need to think ahead; for me, its making my green smoothie. Ill make a big batch and put it in Mason jars and keep it in the fridge, so in the morning I can just grab one and put it in my bag with an ice pack, so its waiting for me and its packed with nutrition. Ill also look at my schedule, which changes on a day-to-day basis, and carve out at least a half an hour for something active. Like what I did with Renae and Chad today that was an intense workout, but it was only 30 minutes. We can all find 30 minutes in our day to do that.

Youre known for your backyard garden can you share some kale recipes?

I grow so much kale its ridiculous, mainly because a lot of my yard is shaded, but also because its a superfood. I like to braise it in chicken broth and add hot chili flakes and garlic, which adds so much flavor. I also have it in my green smoothies every day. Ill put kale, romaine, spinach and celery in with a little bit of fruit to sweeten it up. I find that if you dont like that bitter taste, pineapple does a really good job of balancing it with acidity and sweetness. So just get some frozen pineapple and throw it in with coconut water, and it should taste a lot better. But as your palate changes, you could do less fruit and more greens.

With your interest in cooking and gardening, plus experience in fashion and entertainment, do you have any specific post-swim career aspirations?

I have been blessed with wonderful sponsors, such as TRX and ONeill [Coughlin recently helped design their ONeill 365 collection], and I have had a lot of really cool opportunities because of that. Im still trying to figure out what my post-swimming career is going to look like, but Im going to continue to compete for a little longer. I definitely want to write a cookbook at some point, so thats something in the back of my mind, but right now its just about getting back in shape.

Do you have any lucky charms or superstitions, when it comes to competitions?

I dont have any superstitions, but I do find myself counting all the time, so when Im in the pool, Ill always do eight kicks off of the wall. And another part of my routine is that I always do a running dive into the pool. Its just something Ive done for the past 10 years at Cal. Im always in the end lane, and I hate getting in the water more than anything, so I just wait for everyone else to get in the water first, and then I run alongside the pool and dive in.

I have to ask whats it really feel like to win an Olympic medal?

Its indescribable. Theres so much pressure going in that theres a certain sense of relief, in addition to the excitement. Its really an emotion that there are no words for, though, and its something Ill never forget.

Do you have a favorite non-swimming memory from London?

I really enjoyed going to BMX. It was the first time that I went to a non-pool event at an Olympic Games. In Athens, I was able to go to diving, and then in Beijing, I was supposed to go to BMX, but it got rained out. Following are seven steps that can serve as suggestions for your special weight loss system. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not a similar thing. Many weight loss programs have tricked people into believing that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss applications only work by producing a person's body to burn more muscle flesh and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. So it was really cool to be a spectator at that event and to see something that was so different from swimming. And in between the quarter finals and the semifinals, they did BMX freestyle, where they do all these crazy flips. They did a really good job of entertaining the crowd; it was fun.

Switching gears as a Dancing with the Stars alum, have you been watching the all-star season? And if so, are you rooting for anyone, in particular?

I have been watching! Shawn Johnson is really, really good. This is the first season Ive watched since I was on because it was hard for me to watch because I missed it so much. I keep thinking, Oh my gosh, that was so much fun, I want to do it again! But theyre really good this season. Apollo Ono is doing quite well Ive got to cheer for the athletes. But Shawn, man, she was perfect last week!

Do you give in to any other guilty pleasures, besides reality TV?

This definitely does not go along the lines of a healthy diet, but it is football season, and my ultimate guilty pleasure is to be at a Raiders game with a bratwurst with relish and onions and an ice-cold beer. If I do make it out to a baseball game or a football game, thats my treat.

Any final fitness advice you can share with readers?

I believe that its important to stay active. You dont necessarily have to go to the gym or run five miles a day. Just fit in ways to be active if youre at a desk all day, get up and move around; walk around when youre on the phone, and take the stairs when you can. Little things like that make a big difference. And if you have 20-30 minutes in your day to get a workout in, try to superset exercises where you work on one muscle group and immediately go into next. Your heart rate will skyrocket, but youre allowing separate muscle groups to rest in between, so youre getting the most bang for your buck in a short amount of time.

Thanks very much, Natalie!
