If you have worked hard to teach your kids to make healthy food choices, The Florida Legislature may now be of some assistance. They recently passed The Healthy School Meals Act of 2010 (H.R. 4870). What does this mean for our kids? The hope is that it will mean lunches that are more nutritious in Florida schools.

The epidemic of obesity in all of society cannot be overstated; however, even worse off is the future generation. Today, one in three children is overweight and one in five is obese. More and more we see what use to be largely adult medical conditions, being diagnosed in children. Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, and Heart Disease have become more prevalent in our children. The State of Florida has recognized that this is an area where Florida has a huge ability to help. After all, we grow many healthy vegetables and fruits in our sunshine state.

The Healthy Schools Act provides incentives to schools that choose to offer plant based alternatives for lunch. By offering such fare as vegetable burgers or soy chicken nuggets, vegetarian children or those who require more protein will have healthy choices. Schools who participate will also offer milk of various fat percentage contents, as well as plant based milk such as soy milk, without a note from parents or a doctors prescription. Currently, children who are lactose intolerant or do not drink milk for other reasons are provided no beverage at all with their meal, or offered juice or water.

These minor changes could stand to have a tremendous impact in lowering rates of obesity and overweight children as well as potentially have a positive effect on the lives of millions of children and their families. As an example of the significance of the change, consider the fact that a 2.1 oz serving of chicken is 200 calories. By modifying the diet slightly and adding soy based products that same serving size drops to a mere 80 calories, while adding grams of protein and reducing fat.

The hope of the state is that the school will use the incentive to purchase Florida grown fruits and vegetables to serve instead of high fat, high calorie foods. Csar A. Lara, MD, founder of Csar A. Lara, MD; Center for Weight Management is pleased that the legislature has implemented this healthy change. This dietary change in our school lunches will have a tremendous impact on the future health of our young children and will positively affect the lives of not only the children, but their families, states Dr. Lara.

Dr. Lara is well known for making positive, healthy changes in the lives of patients, and has helped thousands of people achieve and manage healthy weight. He is concerned about the obesity epidemic in Americas children and noted, I believe this is a step in the right direction to help children and parents make good, healthy decisions.
