We are living in an age of high technology and fast paced lives. Seems that there are not enough hours in a day to complete the tasks we set for ourselves let alone trying to tackle everyday jobs like laundry, grocery shopping and house cleaning, especially while holding a full-time job!. We hit the drive through windows at fast food restaurants and order take-out because its so much faster and easier than actually cooking at home. A fat reducing overview can help you build a clear summarize of what you demand to focus on to achieve your fat reducing goal if you're a starter; or serve as a reminder for these who are at an advanced or more advance level of their weightloss plan. Applying are seven steps that can serve as instructions for your personal weight loss system. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not the same thing. Many weight loss applications have tricked people into wondering that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss programs only work by causing a person's body to reduce more muscle tissue and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. Our children are, fortunately, involved in extra-curricular activities that allow them to keep busy, stay out of trouble and stay active, but it also means we spend a lot more time sitting behind the wheel of a car. When we used to find the time to visit our friends and family in person, we now find ourselves emailing, texting or calling because we dont have the time to spare.

The average employee spends approximately 50 waking hours per week in the workplace, or taking care of responsibilities related to the work place; while the average person gets only about 5-6 hours of sleep per night.

When do we slow down long enough to take care of ourselves!

Thank goodness employers are starting to take full advantage of a new concept called Wellness in the Workplace. Major corporations right here in the Pittsburgh area, as well as across the country, are beginning to realize the importance of healthy employees, not to mention the reduction in health care costs.

As wellness programs are becoming increasingly popular among companies, the benefits are also becoming apparent. These programs encourage the employees to become active by offering state-of-the-art fitness facilities within the workplace, programs that aid in weight loss and smoking cessation, information on preventable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity as well as Biometric testing. By offering a wellness program in the workplace, the employees can take full advantage of the ability to exercise without leaving the workplace, thereby providing me time during the day.

Employees with known health risk factors often pay more for insurance because it costs more to insure them. A healthy lifestyle can reduce the occurrence of preventable diseases which can accumulate to approximately 90% of health care costs resulting in approximately 50% of company profits! Among the other benefits seen by implementing wellness programs are:

  • Reduction of Stress Levels
  • Reduction of Absenteeism/Sick Leave
  • Reduction of Injuries
  • Improved Productivity/Performance
  • Social environment with co-workers
  • Ability to sleep better, reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, reduce body weight
  • Control Increasing Health Care Costs

The employees seem to applaud the idea; Marsha, an executive secretary at one of Pittsburghs leading supplement companies, comments on their wellness program and fitness facility:

Our company offers a wellness program that includes discounts on supplements, Zumba classes, yoga classes, and a company gym that I use in the mornings, but many people stagger their workouts throughout the day to use the gym when it isnt busy. As long as your manager approves, theres no set time, it is available 24/7. Having an exercise facility in the workplace definitely makes it easier to fit a workout into my day. The company provides towels, showers, shampoo, hairdryers, etc. so there's no excuses NOT to workout. Im amazed that more people dont take advantage of it!

"I also find that there is absolutely better rapport between employees due to the gym! I have met more people, both men and women, in the gym that I would not normally have met. There's a group of us that work out in the mornings and we've developed a buddy system. There have been many times when I couldnt bring myself to get out of bed to work out, and the women in the gym would email or call me to see if I was ok. One woman texted me each morning at 4:30 am to make sure I got up for about a week. Her dedication to my well-being helped me find the energy to get out of bed for my workouts. For the most part, everyone gets along and we have fun.

Jaffee, Human Resources Generalist at Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. says, I feel having a fitness center in my workplace absolutely makes it easier to fit exercise into my day! Its so accessible, open 24/7, and its free! Theres no excuse not to make it to the gym before or after work or even during a lunch break."

It also helps me to exercise more consistently; Ive held gym memberships in the past and rarely utilized them. There is also better rapport between employees; we have a common interest which gets you better acquainted. At MEPPI, having 6 facilities, you may not see other coworkers from other divisions. I personally have established workout buddies who keep me focused, motivated and accountable.

Our society is so fast-moving and hectic these days, that when an idea comes along that makes our lives easier, attention needs to be paid......and our health is way too important to put on the back burner.
