June 9 is National Get Outdoors Day, so what kind of activities can you do outdoors in the Colorado Springs area?
The Florissant Fossil Beds is about a 35 mile drive West of Colorado Springs. They have two self-guided tours, plus a total of 14 miles of hiking trails. The Petrified Forest Walk is a one-mile gravel trail that is mostly flat and out in the open. The trail passes petrified Redwood stumps, an historic excavation site, and a geologic timeline exhibit. The Ponderosa Trail is a half-mile paved trail that is wheelcair and stroller accessible. It passes through a modern Ponderosa forest. There is also an outdoor exhibit area with views of petrified redwood trees. Entrance is FREE on June 9, 2012.
You can do a lot of walking outdoors at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. They have four one-hour self-guided tours and three two-hour self-guided tours to choose from, or roam the zoo with no itinerary. There are many exhibits to see, carousel and train rides, and much more. Fees are adults; $17.25, children ages 3-11: $12.25, and seniors age 65+: $15.25. Children under 2 are free. Hours of operation: 9AM-6PM.
Colorado Springs has many hiking trails in the area. If you rather stay closer to home and not have to deal with crowds, you can go to your nearest park and play! Bring a ball and enjoy a game of dodgeball or kickball, or play a game of hide-and-go-seek.
