We talked today with John Rhode, fresh off his Biggest Loser season 12 finale win last night and red-eye flight to New York, where he appeared this morning on the Today show.
"It is very much a psychological, emotional battle," he told Today co-host Ann Curry. "My plan right now is I'm focused on running the L.A. marathon. That's my focus right now. After that, then I'm going to have to find a new focus."
Focusing on things other than food is one way for him to keep off the 220 pounds that he lost, he said today.
"Its still hard to me to admit my food addiction," he told us. "It's hard for me to admit it, but I can't think of too many reasons why a person would get to 445 pounds.
"Clearly I need to renegotiate my relationship with food, and see food for what it is," he said. "Food is not a reward. If there's a reason to eat a certain item, then, yeah, go and eat that item. If Im eating out of boredom ... or stress, then I need to come up with some alternatives -- I can't go back to that lifestyle."
That alternative will probably be sharing his story of weight loss, which he plans to do often.
"I'm definitely going to pay it forward, backward, sideways, up, down and around," he said. "I feel obligated just from being on the show."
One place he has already started is at the high school he teaches and coaches at -- Desert Ridge High School in Mesa, Ariz.
"I've already been working with the head varsity coach at Desert Ridge High School, Jeremy Hathcock, and we're working at putting together an off-season program." He also wants to talk with the entire school about combatting childhood obesity.
"I'm gonna get those kids to where they feel like they have some power. I want to empower them to be able to take control of their destiny," he said.
