February 26-March 3, 2012 was National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. Although most people weren't aware the week existed, there was quite a buzz about eating disorders on a few diet and health related blogs. Because of the nature of eating disorders, it's often not openly discussed. If you are concerned that you or someone you know has an eating disorder, the following information will clarify what an eating disorder is, common signs of an eating disorder, and where to get help and treatment in Philly.

According to WebMd, "Eating disorders involve serious disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme and unhealthy reduction of food intake or severe overeating, as well as feelings of distress or extreme concern about body shape or weight."

The three most common eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge-eating. Because of the stigma attached to eating disorders, many cases are not recorded. The National Eating Disorder Association(NEDA) discloses at any given time, there are approximately eight to ten million women and around one million men afflicted with Anorexia or Bulimia; Binge-eating includes millions more suffering from an eating disorder.

Anorexia brings about an intense fear of gaining weight. Initially, it may be a normal weight loss plan. At some point, losing weight becomes an obsession and one can never be thin enough. People who have this disorder always feel they are 'too fat', no matter how thin they are. A fat reducing review can help you produce a clear outline of what you require to focus on to achieve your fat burning purpose if you're a starter; or serve as a reminder for those who are at an intermediate or more advance level of their weightloss plan. Promptly after are seven steps that can serve as instructions for your special weight loss system. The first thing that one must understand is that losing weight and losing fat is not a similar thing. Many weight loss programs have misled people into believing that it is the same, but most diets and weight loss plans only work by causing a person's body to lose more muscle cells and water than actual body fat, more help please visit The Fat Loss Factor. They seldom eat and inherently starve themselves. This disorder causes damage to the heart and kidneys.

Bulimia sufferers binge; they consume an excessive amount of food in a brief amount of time. After binging, the food is purged by vomiting, laxatives, or too much physical activity/exercise. Consistent, excessive purging can cause damage to the gums, tooth enamel, the heart and kidneys.

Binge-eating pertains to uncontrollably consuming too much food in a short amount of time to deal with negative feelings or situations, stress, depression, anxiety or the inability to control how to eat normally.

Familiar signs of an eating disorder include the following:

Rapid significant weight loss Eating very fast, then purging immediately after eating Consuming too much food even when not hungry Eating alone so others can't see what is eaten. Feeling ashamed, guilty, depressed or disgusted after eating Overexercising to inhibit weight gain Consistently lying to others about what is or what is not eaten.

Effectively treating an eating disorder relies on an individual that wants to recover and a professional group that works together to satisfy specific needs of the patient. The following treatment centers in Philadelphia received very good to excellent reviews on local blogs and forums.
